Illinois Pass Area Hikes Near Granby

posted in: Easy Hikes | 0

The section of Arapahoe National Forest that lies northwest of Granby is beautiful and lightly traveled. I’m in the process of mapping out some nice long loops in the area, but for now I have assembled a couple short easy trips. The Illinois Pass Trail is a nice peaceful trail in itself, but it also serves as a connection to the Willow Pass section of the Continental Divide Trail, making for some interesting looking loops that I hope to complete before the end of summer. While you are in the area you may want to take the short hike to Lost Lake also. It’s a very nice, little-known lake that also has a geocache on it’s banks.

The Geocache will have you pulling your hair out trying to find it! Check the Geocaching.com web site for details on the cache, I have not included a route to it. I have also included a track of the road from Granby to the Lost Lake parking lot, because things can get a bit confusing in that area. The road actually makes a complete loop back to route 34, but I didn’t track the whole road for some reason. I’m sure you can figure it out. There are primitive camp sites all through the area along the road, or you can stay at one of the developed campgrounds along Lake Granby. Stillwater is a nice one. If you would rather stay in a hotel, there are plenty around the Granby and Grand Lake areas. Also, hotels in the City of Winter Park usually have great rates during summer.

Oh, and if you haven’t been up to the Granby area lately, prepare to be blown away by the Pine Beetle damage.

Mount Falcon Open Space Park, Morrison

Mount Falcon Open Space Park is a Jefferson County Park located in the foothills between Morrison, Evergreen, and Golden, Colorado. It is a picturesque foothills area that features the remains of a huge house built of rock, as well as signs describing the history of the area and the area’s former owner when it was a ranch. This is a park rich in scenery, wildlife, and history. The course I have outlined in this easy hike will show you all three, as well as visiting a lookout tower and overlook areas. This route tends to stay mostly dry through the winter, so it’s a great off-season hike.

White Ranch Sawmill Loop

posted in: Easy Hikes | 0

This Golden foothills loop hike features excellent views, varied terrain, and includes the White Ranch hiker’s backpacking campground known as the Sawmill Hiker Camp. This is a perfect easy overnighter for the family, or a place to test backpacking gear for later trips in the big mountains. I prefer the cooler climates of spring and fall for foothills hikes like this one, but it’s fun year-round.

If you follow the tracks I have created, you will start at the main parking lot and take the Sawmill trail south to the intersection with Belcher Hill Trail. Stay on Sawmill as it curves west and shortly you will come to the backpacker’s campground. Continue west from the campground, then travel north on the Mustang trail and Belcher Hill trails. You will cross the main road at the small side parking lot and continue along the north side of the road until you intersect with Rawhide Trail. Then simply take the Rawhide trail southeast a short distance to arrive back at the main parking lot. Total distance is approximately 3 miles.

The Sawmill Backpacker Campground is really excellent for super-easy backpacking overnighters. This campground and the Sourdough Campground on the Rawhide trail are the best developed backcountry campsites I have ever seen, a great easy overnight hike for families. The camp has sites with picnic tables, firepits with grill tops, seasonal well water, a vault toilet, firewood, garbage cans, and bearproof storage.

For backpacking, you need a free overnight pass which is available at the trailhead. Just follow the instructions on the backpacking kiosk at the trailhead. The drop slot for the permit is a little tricky to find, just look behind the stack of permits and sure enough there is a slot back there.

Travois-Evening Sun Loop, Near Black Hawk

posted in: Easy Hikes | 0

This hike, in Centennial Cone Open Space Park between Golden and Black Hawk, has some up and down but is only about 2.8 miles long so it’s not very difficult. It’s a great hike for families or dog walking. This hike isn’t impacted by the seasonal closure of Elk Range Trail, so it’s a great springtime trip.

You can hike or mountain bike this trail, although it’s a bit short for a mountain bike. The scenery along this trail is excellent, with some fairly steep ledge dropoffs that provide excellent cliff views. This trail takes you through some old homestead sites as well, so you will see abandoned roads and collapsing barns along the way.

This park has some strange rules which you should be aware of. Before coming to this park make sure you read my Centennial Cone Overview page for details and closures: Centennial Cone Overview Page
